Chapter 4

A Dark Form Appears

Suddenly, they were back on the other side of the hedgerow, with the fields spread out around them. Somehow, things felt more muted here. They were more real, but at the same time, they seemed less substantial.

They looked back at the hedgerow as though they expected to see someone coming through it, but it didn’t move at all.

“Come on,” Eleanor said. “Let’s get out of here. There’s something spooky about this place.”

It was true. The fields out here always seemed to have a strange energy to them. There was bleakness. When Lucy looked at them, she could imagine that there had been a battle there many years ago, and the ghosts of the men who had died there still haunted it, walking the land lost and without hope.

Eleanor shuddered slightly.

“I couldn’t agree more,” Lucy said to Eleanor.

They walked back, and by the time they returned to the canal, they were already feeling better, their spirits already lifting.

They walked past the ruins of the witch’s old cottage. They paused to look at it.

"Yes," Eleanor said, "that place where we were—that was a copy of this place, wasn't it?"

“It certainly looks like it.”

“I’m sure we were right. She created the place we saw to protect that energy. We were lucky to get to see it in person. I’m just worried we might have also led someone else there.”

“You’re still thinking about that dark shape, right?”

"Yes. I wish I knew what it was. It was too far away to determine who it was, but I'm sure it was a man. I just don't know what kind of man."

“Do you think it’s worth seeing if the faun is still here?”

They quickly looked inside, but there was no sign of him.

“I guess we should head back into town,” Eleanor said.

They began to leave the ruins of the cottage, but then, as they stepped outside, they jumped back in shock and saw a man standing before them, dressed all in black.

He was tall, thin, and pale. He had a hooked nose and black eyes. He grinned at them, his thin lips splitting apart to show teeth that were slightly pointed.

His suit looked dated, like something from the nineteenth century.

Straight away, they could sense an aura of malice coming from him. It made the fur on Andy’s back stand on end, and Lucy, who felt such things more acutely than the other two, backed away slowly, her brow furrowing in something like pain.

“Who are you?” Eleanor asked the man.

“I am Elijah. I have come for what you have stolen.”

“And what is that?”

"The power. I have been searching for that power for a long time, but it has always eluded me and was denied to me those few times when I came close to it. I tried to follow you there today, but I was denied again. But you were not. I can sense the power that you have taken from it. That power should be mine! I deserve it!"

Eleanor backed away slowly and warily.
